Remarks & Notes
Stripped of its semaphores, Signal Bridge Number 5 watches over the throat of South Station. These signal bridges were removed in the 1980s. They had been part of an 1899 Westinghouse electro-pneumatic interlocking system controlled by three towers, forcing operators to make all changes in certain sequences. South Bay Interlocking Tower sits beyond the next signal bridge, while an MBTA F40PH and a string of RDCs rebuilt into unpowered coaches wait out the weekend. Hard to recognize any of this today.

The 70's and 80's were a transition period for the MBTA characterized by an eclectic mix of equipment including Budd RDC's, ex-New Haven stainless steel coaches, and a mix of motive power acquired from various railroads.
