The 'Cotton Mill Express' rolls out of the double-track Standedge Tunnel. Opened in 1894, this is the most modern of four tunnels under the Pennine Hills at this point. The first tunnel, opened in 1809, was for the Huddersfield narrow canal, and the approach to this can be seen turning sharp left from the canal basin in the foreground. The other two tunnels were single track railway tunnels, hidden in the trees to the left of the double track tunnel. All the tunnels are over three miles long.
