Remarks & Notes |
A Nevada Northern ore train approaches the lower tunnel in Robinson Canyon during a snow shower. While most of the Nevada Northern Railway runs through a wide, flat valley, this 9-mile stretch running south from Ely to the Mines District is very different. It winds and twists through canyons and tunnels while featuring a pretty steady climb in altitude. The abrupt change in terrain often brings abrupt changes in the weather conditions. It is not uncommon to find partly cloudy skies in Ely, when just a few miles to the west there are low clouds and snow. This branch of the line parallels US Highway 50 - The Loneliest Highway in America. The roadway....which features some sharp curves of its own......is visible on the right side of the photograph. |
