| Class 52 diesel hydraulic D1015 Western Champion catches the early morning sun as it takes the Royal Duchy railtour west past Cholsey. The train would change to steam traction at Westbury in the form of Castle class 4-6-0 5029 Nunney Castle and Britannia class 4-6-2 70013 Oliver Cromwell. D1015 was to run light to Par ready for the return trip. Unfortunately 5029 suffered a hot box, was removed at Newton Abbot and D1015 was recalled from Plymouth to pilot 70013 over the tortuous South Devon banks.
The Westerns were designed to have a body profile that matched the then standard Mark 1 coaching stock, so seeing D1015 hauling such a smart rake of these vehicles was a definate bonus, even if their livery (carmine and cream, otherwise known as blood and custard) is historically inaccurate for haulage by the diesel |
