Remarks & Notes
NGG16 Class Beyer Garratt number 143 blasts up the ruling 1 in 40 gradient around the second reverse curve above Beddgelert heading for the summit of the line 4 miles further on at Pitts Head. When envisaged, the line was to have been electrified and this section to have gradients as steep as 1 in 18; however by the time it was built in 1922/23 the plans had changed to steam power and the course of the railway had to be redesigned using 2 sets of double reverse 180 degree curves to keep to around 1 in 40. Parts of the original course of the line including a road overbridge which terminates in thin air were built and still survive, but were never used
