The Kimberley – De Aar line was one of the last double track steam mainlines in the world. Steam was destined to finish in 1992, but Spoornet, mindful of the hundreds of enthusiasts that used to visit the line every year, organized two steam festivals in 1990 and 1991. Traffic was worked almost exclusively by steam for a week; not only by the regular Class 25NC’s, but by a number of special and museum locos as well - here Class 15CA No. 2828 leads Class 23 No. 3300 (both 4-8-2’s) past the splendid signal bracket south of Belmont. Today the steam is long gone, the signals have also gone, the line has been singled and electrified...... oh yes, and nobody visits here anymore!
