| No less than 510 of these heavy freight locomotives were constructed by Skoda between 1952 and 1958 and were not only the last new steam class built for CSD but, lasting until the early-1980’s, were the last steam locos to see service in Czechoslovakia. In the Communist-era No. 556.0506 was something of a prestige engine and kept immaculate to work cross border traffic on this same line to Austria. |
