On the far western edge of the C&NW were a bunch of GP35's assigned to Chadron, Neb. Here four of them 863,848,847,852 pull hard to get up out of a sag near Whitewood. Most freight on this line consisted of bentonite and wood chips from the forest of the nearby Black Hills. Track conditions were generally bad to worse, so getting up speed for hill such as the one we are looking at was out of the question. As an aside 863 was one of the few western division GP35's left in the older yellow scheme at this time.
