The TCO (train control officer) at Rooiwal sets up the signals for the next approaching passenger train. Rooiwal is one of five remaining stations on the Free State main line between Vereeniging and Kroonstad with operational semaphores. Despite plans to close these stations in the near future, the points (switches) have recently been electrified, hence the white circuit box on the left side of the track diagram above the levers.
