Soutbound coal loads work along the shore of the mostly frozen Kenai Lake, less than 20 miles from reaching their destination, the port city of Seward. There, the train will unload its cargo for eventual export on a barge to Korea, then will start the 400 mile journey back north to Healy to collect more black diamonds.
I've been fortunate to have spent quite some time in the "Great White North" photographing trains on the super-scenic, and always friendly, Alaska Railroad. Here's a collection of some of my favorite shots from our 49th state.
