Remarks & Notes |
The old GP38-2 engines from Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc. were some of the most reliable and versatile locomotives typically used for switching freight cars around yards, leading trains up secondary lines, or working in tandem with advanced horsepower locomotives on mainline freight trains. Conrail inherited 223 engines from the Penn Central Railroad in 1976 and purchased an additional 119 engines between 1977 and 1979. This Ballast training operating under the Buckingham Branch Railroad has departed the Martin Marietta Aggregate Quarry in Doswell and is parked on the old C&O siding track waiting for the signal to pull down into the Doswell Yard. Two CSX GP38-2 Engines are in charge of this heavy movement - CSX units 2738 & 2575. #2738 was built in 1973 for the Penn Central Railroad with road #8103 before being sold to Conrail with the same road number. #2575 was built in 1972 for the Louisville & Nashville Railroad with road #4065. |
