Back in the 1980's most railfans traveling to South Africa to chase steam tried to stop at Kraankuil in the middle of the Karoo and to spend a night in the hotel near the railway station. From the room, it was possible to witness the heavy freight trains running between Kimberley and De Aar, almost all double headed by two 25NC's, storming at full speed through the little station. At that time, this show was repeated approximately every 30 minutes! I did not sleep most of the night, but it was well worth the experience.
