Remarks & Notes
In the spring of 1966, Southern eliminated a portion of its Washington to Memphis “Tennessean” passenger train, nos. 45 and 46. The Chattanooga to Memphis leg was retained for a few more years, and retimed to connect with a rescheduled 41 and 42 (the “Pelican”) at Chattanooga. Trains 17 and 18, the overnight “Birmingham Special” were also rescheduled in the shake up. About the time of the change, train 42, the eastbound “Pelican,” eases into Bristol approaching State Street---the Tennessee-Virginia line. FP7 6714 on the left will leave shortly with train 46, a Tennessee-only stub of the former through train that operated for a brief time between Bristol and Chattanooga only to satisfy the Tennessee Public Service Commission's order. This run normally had a single unit and one car. With no connections or through traffic at either end, approval for discontinuance was mercifully approved in short order. A Southern road foreman of engines (RFE) can be seen climbing down from train 42’s lead FP7. [Editorial Note: Thanks to Ron Flanary for the caption assistance.]
