More than 100 years ago, the Rio Grande built three branchlines to tap the mineral riches of the Tintic Mining District. Today, only one of them remains, rusting away among the pinion pine and sagebrush of Utah's Goshen Valley. The last train to ply these rails was back in 1986 when local #664 with two GP30's ran the entire 32.5 mile distance from Springville up the branch to the Burgin mine with a box car loaded with mining equipment. D&RGW management had hoped this line would once again become a conveyor of gold ore, but the venture never materialized. Mother Nature slowly reclaims the right of way of this long forgotten and obscure branch of the D&RGW.
