Battling a typical Upstate New York snowstorm, an MA&N crewmember locks the switch on a siding leading into a telephone pole loading yard in Boonville before heading south to Utica. Today's train — outbound telephone poles and boxcars that were consigned to Burrows Paper — is indicative of the forest products region this railroad serves. (Note also the piles of logs off in the distance.) Today's train went as far north as Lyons Falls, the northern end of the MA&N's southern division. Service to Lyons Falls is sporadic these days because the chief industry there, Lyons Falls Pulp & Paper, shut down a decade ago. Thankfully, business on the southern end of the line remains brisk, keeping veterans Alcos such as this one carrying on the long and storied tradition of mountain railroading close to the Adirondack park. The high switch stand and the triangular yellow flanger board are indicators of the amount of snow this part of Upstate New York can receive! Digital Photo.
