| It is one day shy of a full moon on a spectacular clear and cold night in the last frontier. A mixed consist of a GP38-2 a GP40-2 and an SD70MAC sit on the head end of a southbound mixed freight on the "north main" deep within the confines of the ARR’s main classification yard. This train is built and ready to go but won't be called until 0200 the next morning for the run to Whittier and a date with the CN's barge connection from Prince Rupert where she'll strip the barge of the loads and backload the empties seen here for their journey south to the land of the maple leaf. To the east (railroad north) can be seen the small winking red light of the CTC signal at CP 1170 guarding access to the mainline and some low hanging smoke shrouding the lower reaches of the rugged Chugach Mountains. It was only 2 degrees out when I shot this, my first railroad photo of 2011, but I think it was worth braving the elements, don't you? Note: the photographer is a railroad employee with permission to be on the property and was wearing all required PPE while taking this photograph. |
