Remarks & Notes
In 1956 there occurred a rare (but most welcome) remembrance of the days of Edwardian splendour. The nationalised British Railways Eastern and North Eastern regions encouraged the restoration of a few of their veteran station pilots to pristine mechanical and external appearance. Captured by an unknown photographer is the 1924-built N7 0-6-2 tank of GE design that was chosen to receive the full treatment. She is emerging from the smoky and cavernous terminus of the former Great Eastern Railway at London's Liverpool Street Station. Deep in the shadows can just be seen the other recipient of pristine livery, a 1904-built Class J69 0-6-0 tank (one of the famed 'Jazz' engines). This latter locomotive No.68619 was also embellished with the lovely deep blue Great Eastern livery and featured a cab-side crest of that former company. A father with his two sons in typical 50s schoolboy garb have no doubt been enjoying these wonderful sights, alas now but a distant memory. York and Newcastle stations each had one similarly adorned 0-6-0 tank locomotive of North Eastern Railway Class J72 but these were liveried in LNER apple green.
