Remarks & Notes |
In the snowshed at Cumbres Pass. Denver & Rio Grande Western #485 sits with her freight on a snowshed-covered leg of the Cumbres Pass Wye waiting for traffic to pass. For pretty obvious reasons, the D&RGW once covered most of the wye at this location with a wooden snowshed. The winter on Cumbres Pass is a rather long season and the snow levels can be mighty deep. Over 500 ft. of the two legs of this wye was once covered with wooden snowsheds, but most of these structures are gone now. The section you see here is what remains, and its existence is the result of considerable restoration and maintenance work on the part of the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. These efforts of these volunteers make it possible for visitors today to experience just a taste of the rigors of mountain railroading. This re-creation is courtesy of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and Lerro Productions. |
