Remarks & Notes |
This is Arnold’s Loop on Union Pacific’s Shafter sub.in eastern Nevada. The route was originally built by the Western Pacific Ry. in order to keep their maximum grade to 1%. Arnold’s Loop is on the eastern face of the Toano Range on the approach to Silver Zone Pass. The loop itself is on a high fill, but both approaches feature some very deep rock cuts. All of this is glued to the mountainside overlooking the nearly uninhabited Pilot Valley. This day’s best train was this westbound grainer with a visitor from Canada as 2nd unit. |
