On January 4th, 1996, Utah celebrated 100 years of statehood. Both Union Pacific and Southern Pacific ran passenger specials on January 3rd to mark the occasion. It must have been a big day for the tiny city of Eureka (population 600) and the Tintic High School marching band to perform a series of patriotic songs at Tintic Junction, a location 699 miles east of Los Angeles on the historic LA&SL. The train began its journey that day at Cedar City, Utah and tied up for the day at the UP passenger depot in downtown Salt Lake City. More than likely, the tiny burg of Tintic Junction has never seen this many people at this location at any time in its history.
