As daylight comes to an end veteran tower operator L E Lee waves to a passing empty coal train. With the closure of WB Tower on Dec 9, 2011, last open tower on the Baltimore Division, Mr. Lee will retire shortly after a railroad career that spanned 37 years and at least 9 towers between Cumberland and Brunswick, Maryland. I had the pleasure of first meeting Mr. Lee when he was ticket agent/operator at HF Tower in Harpers Ferry, WV, some 25 years ago. Special permission given for photo.
Oh the stories these special buildings could tell. Originally the brains of the rails they monitored, working to insure effecient rail service for our nation! A tribute!
