A Utah Railway coal train passes a Southern Pacific train of the same commodity at Soldier Summit, Utah, on September 7, 1995. At the time, Utah hauled its trains with a fleet of rebuilt SD40s, while SP’s roster of General Electric AC4400CW are new, and No. 317 and train is temporarily “dead in the water” as some computer problems are worked out. Note the trail of sand on the railheads, left by the power as the train was backed into the clear.
