Appearing forlorn awaiting a return to service, WP GP35 3020 sits outside UP's North Yard Shops in Salt Lake City. The 3020 was wrecked in July 1982 on WP's Reno, Nevada branch. After the WP-UP merger in 1983, it was slowly rebuilt by UP North Yard shop forces as time permitted. The wreck damaged long hood was swapped from retired UP GP35 #763. By March of 1986, the cab was replaced from wrecked MoPac GP38-2 #2031. Finally, by January 1987 the resurrected GP35 was released for general service in new paint as the Union Pacific 798. It would only serve on the active UP roster until Dec. 1993 when it was retired and sold to Watco, Inc. for use on the Eastern Idaho Railroad.
