An eastbound Southern Pacific unit coal train of CTRN hoppers claws up Tennessee Pass in the canyon between Red Cliff and Pando, Colorado, on the afternoon of September 4, 1995. The SP GE AC4400CWs are new, and nine of them power this particular train. Besides the set up front led by No. 317, a mid-train swing helper is about half way back in the train, barely visible in the canyon four curves back. Also, another three-unit set of AC4400CWs helpers are cut in 17 cars from the rear of the train; an operation that only occurred briefly at the beginning of SP’s AC era on the pass.
