Remarks & Notes
The Denver & Rio Grande Western's very first SD40T-2 'tunnel motor' finds itself in Union Pacific's North Yard in Salt Lake City. The 5341, part of a series of 73 units was constructed by EMD in October 1974. The SD40T-2 model was fitted with EMD's tunnel configuration, a design pioneered by SP for improved cooling while in operation in tunnels and snowsheds. The design replaced the radiator spray feature as used on the SD45s. 69 Rio Grande SD40T-2s went to the Union Pacific Railroad in 1996 at the time of the merger, while four (DRGW 5348, 5370, 5402, 5408) were wrecked and retired by the Southern Pacific.
