Remarks & Notes
In 2009, the oldest American railroad operating under its original charter, the Long Island Rail Road Company, celebrated its 175th anniversary. Although the actual day was April 24th, the railroad ran a special anniversary fantrip in July along its original mainline, which runs from Long Island City to Greenport. On this day, the tiny Greenport Station, which typically sees no more than a two car train and a couple of dozen passengers at one time, played host to a sold out four car train's worth of visitors. The train is seen here shortly after arrival, donning a special drumhead, as people continue to disembark. To the right is the usual "Greenport Scoot", ready to head back west within the hour.
