Amtrak Train 72 races south along the beach at San Clemente, Calif. on Sept. 4, 1976 as hundreds enjoy the sun, sand and salty water when the track was still owned by the AT&SF Ry. and there were only three pairs of Amtrak trains between Los Angeles and San Diego per day. Beach goers today will see eleven pairs of daily Amtraks, plus many Metrolink and other California commuter runs on one of the densest rail lines in America.
