In the early 1980's, the Grand Trunk Western was looking to add to their roster as traffic and profits rose. In addition to acquiring a large number of Ex-UP SD40-2's, they also acquired a small amount of GP38-2's from P&LE. P&LE acquired these from Rock Island and painted a few black, and when GTW received them, they were quickly painted with the GT logo, but kept black to help place power into service quicker. Here, a pair of the former P&LE geeps and an SD40 enter the yard in Durand to pick up cars for their westbound train. 35mm slide from my collection, photo by W.E. Grove.
These are the paint schemes you didn't think would turn up on the locomotives that they're on. (or they
re just really awesome paint schemes that didn't get the the credit they deserved...)
