One of the early ventures into dieselization that the Clinchfield did was on EMD's F-units. Delivered in December 1952, 818 was a standard F7A that the railroad initially planned to run on the railroad under the A-B-A format that they ordered from EMD, however, with the desire to run longer trains, the Clinchfield soon adopted the theory of "horsepower is horsepower" and would put whatever they could to pull the heavy coal drags over the mountains. 818 was traded in to EMD in 1974 for a new SD45-2. 35mm slide from my collection, photographer unknown.
