This heritage special train near Paekakariki is marking exactly 150 years of the opening of first public railway in New Zealand. The official KiwiRail supported and media covered events based at Christchurch in October were true to location but a little premature. DA 1431 was built in 1957 by General Motors/ Clyde in NSW Australia and was in service with NZ Railways (later Tranz Rail) until 1988. The single track section in this location passes through 5 tunnels on 2% grade which still has regular banking locomotives. The steep hillside has had extensive stabilization and protection work.
