Remarks & Notes
Forgotten and left to rot on the storage tracks north of downtown Pennington on the St. Charles Branch, this wooden cupola caboose--L&N 500--had reportedly been purchased by a Lee County, VA businessman. Unfortunately, he had no way to move it off the rails, so it was likely scrapped. The L&N had a large number of these cabs, converted from wooden ventilated box cars. The company upgraded its caboose fleet considerably in the '60s with both steel bay window cabs built in its shops at South Louisville, and more purchased from commercial car builders.
