A scene almost surreal... Only ridge lines apart and less than a mile as the crow flies, a massive coal and coke facility with dozens of trucks hustling around the property contributes to a huge percentage of coal traffic on NS' Buchanan Branch south of Grundy. While there's no signs of a dying coal industry at Jewell Smokeless Coal Corporation across the ridge, there's hardly any signs of life at the pictured facility above. An entire load out and its supporting infrastructure stand abandoned in a narrow valley in rural Appalachia. An EMD product of some significance has been abandoned and its rails and coal yard slowly being reclaimed by vegetation. A scene that I'm sure was once hustling with coal trucks, conveyor belts, and loaded hoppers now sits abandoned in the unusually appropriately named community of Dismal Creek.
