A rare view (taken with permission) of Great Northern's former ore dock No. 1 in the Allouez neighborhood of Superior. This dock, last used in 1988, loaded the great lakes vessel Edmund Fitzgerald on November 9, 1975 before that ship sailed into shipwreck lore. Ore cars could be direct dumped into the pockets or the conveyor shuttle (on the left side) could fill the dock from stockpile. Surprisingly there are still a number of dock pockets full of taconite pellets that were never loaded into ships before BN pulled the plug. Today BNSF uses a new (mid-1970s) silo-style conveyor facility to load ore to the right of these shuttered docks.
