| A view looking at the shuttered former LTV Steel Mining Company (Erie Mining) ore dock at Taconite Harbor. The ore dock hasn't been used for shipping ore in ten years (LTV quit in 2001 and successor Cliffs Erie dumped some remaining ore here in 2004, later to be reclaimed and shipped out by rail in 2008). Trains could dump here in motion by employing a unique system that used the inverted rail on the left of the track to activate a rubber wheel on each ore car that opened and closed the doors. This rail system was operated from the tower I took this shot from. |
