A little Wise County, VA history: I took this shot on Saturday, November 29, 1980. We're standing on a bridge that crossed the west portal of Maytown Tunnel---in Coeburn, VA. This is the Interstate Railroad's Miller Yard line and it was abandoned years ago. Today, about a mile and a half ahead of this train is the trail head of the Guest River Gorge Trail. Even L&N trains came this way from 1930 to '35, when it deemed more practical to pay the Interstate a flat rate per car. This train is the Interstate's First Hill Crew, and the crew was in the process of dropping a car in the spur at Maytown before continuing to Miller Yard with two cars and a caboose. The heavy interchange traffic with the L&N and Clinchfield had been gone for seven years, so trips to Miller Yard were now infrequent, and getting more so each month. This site is overgrown and difficult to find today---but Maytown Tunnel is still there--an abandoned and forgotten void that passes under a hill in south Coeburn.
