Ghost in the Machine - What is left of UP 669, a EMD GP38-2 sits forlornly in the yard Jacumba Station attached to a small, equally dilapidated Alco switcher.
Available pictures show that UP 669 was still pulling freight out on the high iron for Union Pacific as late as April of 2010.
How this unit ended up on the Desert Line is unknown at this time, but one thing seems certain - that ole number 669 is here to stay, and will probably one day, be scrapped on site.
The unit is marooned in Jacumba between track leading into Mexico and the Gorge that at this time, is completely impassible due to a derailment at Dubbers Spur, and numerous rock falls between Dubbers and Dos Cabezas. This railroad was embargoed in 2008 and there have been no trains running on this track since that time.
