Sunset over the Sunset Route: Booming along east of Lawrence, Kansas, F7A 676 has a couple head-end cars, an RDC and a coach, the remnants of Train 40, a once-important secondary run on the Southern California- Chicago route. On this hot summer evening in 1962, a storm is brewing in the west, and the future is dark, too. Trains 39-40 will be discontinued in two years, and the 676, one of three F7As geared for 71 miles an hour and purchased for passenger service, will find its way into the Chicago commuter pool.
