High Bridge State Park, located in Farmville, Virginia is nearly 2400 feet long, and reaches 170 feet above the Appomattox River. Originally constructed in 1854 by the Southside Railroad, stating that at the time, it very well may have been the longest and tallest bridge in the world. However, in April of 1865, the Battle of High Bridge raged on just days before the Surrender at Appomattox, leaving the bridge nearly destroyed. After the war, this bridge was reconstructed by 1870, and re-open shortly there after. 50 years later, the Norfolk and Western built a much friendlier line around the High Bridge, which was favored due to the lower grades, and by the early 2000's, this line was finally abandoned for good. It is now a State park, and you can walk approximately 32 miles of the old "Farmville Line", going 16 miles in either direction of the bridge.
