Shoo-fly, Don't Bother Me...

In June 1976, two-month-old F40PH 223 leads Amtrak San Diegan #773 (San Diego to Los Angeles) as it threads its way around the newly installed shoo-fly just east of the Fullerton, California, passenger station. The six-car train, passing within feet of the old Standard Oil warehouse (with the large FULLERTON painted on the roof), will make its last stop here before heading to Los Angeles. The shoo-fly was installed to allow Lemon Street to be dropped below grade, which will eliminate the grade crossing. Thirty or so years later, eliminating grade crossings would become a mania in southern California - Fullerton was just a trend setter! (The building behind the Standard Oil warehouse was the Pacific Citrus Products Company - the company that created Hawaiian Punch!)
