What does 1976 and 2016 have in common? Conrail and SD45's! April 1, 2016 marks the 40th anniversary for the beginning of operations of Conrail. Although a General Electric ES44AC was not in anyone's imagination 40 years ago, Seaboard Coast Line's EMD SD45 number 2024 certainly was. Built in July 1971, 2024 was a workhorse for SCL, CSX, and Montana Rail Link, and was restored to its 1970-era appearance by volunteers at the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. SARM also operates freight as the Walden Ridge Railroad Company along a branch line connecting to Norfolk Southern at Blair, TN. As soon as cosmetic restorations were complete on February 6, 2016, the 2024 operated to the NS interchange just in time to greet another paint scheme from the past, as NS intermodal train 23G rolled east with the Conrail heritage unit leading the way.
