| What a mess. An eastbound Utah Ry. empty coal train derailed in Utah's Price River Canyon while passing a westbound Union Pacific loaded coal train and loaded cars from the westbound derailed into the Utah Ry. train. Seven loaded cars on the Union Pacific train CSVPH-24 derailed due a broken rail and were struck by passing cars on the Utah Ry. train. A total of 7 loaded cars in the UP train derailed and 16 empties from the UTAH train derailed. Access was difficult as the tracks were separated from the highway by the river. The ex. D&RGW wreck train was called to the location from Grand Junction. Seen here is the Grande's 250 ton Bucyrus Erie crane MW028, the Rio Grande's largest, which was on location but was apparently not used. The wreckage was shoved over the bank by several cats and trackhoes to provide enough clearance for one track to be opened to restore traffic. The first train through was an eastbound BNSF powered empty coal train. The crane was named "Samson de Grande" in a D&RGW employee contest. See FRA report HQ-2007-52 for all the details. |
