Over the history of railroading, many lines have been abandoned, but few have been forced to do so because of nuclear contamination...

Yaniv railyard in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone has laid almost completely dormant for exactly 30 years, as the 30th anniversary of the Chornobyl (Russian language: Chernobyl) is remembered this week. The tracks have been overtaken by plants and encroached upon by trees since the disaster, and Yaniv is essentially a railroad graveyard, where contaminated equipment was abandoned.

The overpass over the railyard, visible in the background of the photo is colloquially known as the "Bridge of Death" The oft-told story is that Pripyat residents ran to the bridge to get a better view of what was going on at the nuclear plant, and in doing so were exposed to lethal doses of radiation.
