On the inaugural run of Southern Pacific train 99, the steam powered Coast Daylight, on March 21, 1937, the fireman was M. J. Crowley. Thirty-seven years and ten days later, "Deb" Crowley, who had been an engineer for years, made his final run on Amtrak train 1, the westbound Sunset Limited. Amtrak train 1 was late into Yuma, Arizona, when Mr. Crowley climbed into the cab of Amtrak FP7 110 (the former SP 6446), but "Deb" was one who often did what was necessary to get the train back on time, and he nearly did that on his last run, March 31, 1974. After cutting off the train at Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal, the power, a four-unit lashup of Fs, rolled into SP's Taylor Yard and "Deb," wearing his trademark Kromer red hat with white polka dots, climbed out of the cab and ended his exemplary railroading career - with a big smile on his face!
