Remarks & Notes

The re-erection of Conrail's LEMO Tower at Strasburg. LEMO (or J-Tower) is one of only two surviving Victorian Era two-story wooden PRR signal towers; the other being SHORE Tower in North Philly. It's shown here still in its Penn Central Deepwater Green colors, being reassembled after having been cut into seven pieces for over-the-road transport from Lemoyne, PA to Strasburg via I-81 and PA Route 72. Spearheading the project was the Lancaster Chapter, National Railway Historical Society, under the direction of the late Mr. Kenneth G. Murry, project manager of the J-Tower Committee. Over $100,000 was spent by the chapter in moving and restoring the tower to its 1885 appearance, with generous assistance and support of the Strasburg Rail Road. Amtrak also contributed, by donating the "armstrong" machinery from its BRILL Tower. Although the tower has been looking a little worse for the wear lately, recent activity around the structure seems to suggest that it's getting some attention.
