Remarks & Notes
North Platte, Nebraska, was and remains the place to sample everything old and new running on the Union Pacific. On October 2, 1966, the new included Alco Century 855 61, parked at the fuel rack just before departure on a westbound. Alco’s entry into the high-horsepower sweepstakes staged by UP in the early 1960s, the three 5,500-hp units (two A’s and a B) were the most powerful single-unit diesel locomotives built up to that time. Despite their rugged looks, they were also among the least reliable, and UP seldom allowed them to get very far from North Platte, where maintenance help was available. By early 1972, UP had lost patience and all three units were gone. By then, Alco itself had been out of business almost three years.
