Remarks & Notes
One third of the Union Pacific’s roster of Alco Century 855’s, number 61, is on the move westbound, having topped off its 4,000-gallon fuel tank at North Platte. On October 2, 1966, the 5,500-hp unit is barely a year old and already headed to early retirement in 1970. The two A-units and single B-unit mark the end of UP’s long relationship with American Locomotive Works, which built the famous Big Boys as well as the Challengers and 4-8-4s.
