The SU-99 is seen slamming the diamond at Pompton Junction on a very hot evening. The southbound SU-100 went by this very location at about 3:45 in the morning on this day, and reported to Cooperstown that a pile of old ties was on fire very close to the right of way about 400 feet west of the junction. The Fire Department was called in to put out the flames, and the railroad did an inspection and said that it was safe to run trains normally. It is unknown how the fire started, whether it was due to strong heat, vandals, or possibly the Sparta Local (WS5) had thrown sparks too far when they passed by a few hours earlier. It still smelt like damp wood near the site of the fire at the time that the SU-99 passed.
