Typically eastbound loads, one behind another, stopped west of the old C&NW crossing at the foot of the grade to add helpers - at this time either a quartet of SD-40s spliced by a fuel tender, or a pair of SD-70MACs. Ready to roll they would pour it on heading into the grade.
