As Metrolink F59PH 854 accelerates out of Palmdale, ready to make a run up Vincent Grade, the searchlights at Palmdale Junction on Union Pacific's Mojave Subdivision observe in silence. Their days numbered the old US&S searchlights at Palmdale Junction continue to perform the job in which they were intended, protecting the junction between the Palmdale-Colton cutoff and the connector to Metrolink's Valley Sub, formerly Southern Pacific's Saugus Line to Los Angeles.
