Farewell, Old Friend

The Lehigh Valley Railroad was the local mainline road when I was learning photography in the mid-1970's. While the newer GP38-2s and U23Bs drew the hotter assignments, the C420s and C628s handled the more mundane freights. I frequently encountered the C420s, and saw them even more often when they were conveyed to the Delaware & Hudson to support the expanded post-Conrail D&H. The LV C420s retained their numbers as part of the D&H roster. In 1987, most of the LV/D&H C420s left the northeast and headed for Arkansas to join the Arkansas & Missouri roster. Number 410, shown here, has made the journey, apparently as a parts donor to keep yje others running. My old friend has worn LV grey and yellow, LV Cornell Red, and D&H lightning stripes, but A&M red is not in its future.

These are engines that are either already scrapped, are in deadlines, or they're in severe danger of being scrapped. Not everything can be preserved.
